Medusa is described as woman with living snakes for hair — punishment from the goddess Athena for being raped by Poseidon in Athena's sacred temple; those who gaze into Medusa's eyes turn to stone. Medusa was beheaded by Perseus, who then used her head, which retained its ability to turn onlookers to stone, as a weapon, and eventually gave it to the goddess Athena to place on her shield. From the beheaded Medusa sprang Chrysaor, a giant, and Pegasus, the famed winged horse.
