“Marley was dead, to begin with. There is no doubt whatever about that. The register of his burial was signed by the clergyman, the clerk, the undertaker, and the chief mourner. Scrooge signed it: and Scrooge's name was good upon 'Change, for anything he chose to put his hand to. Old Marley was as dead as a door-nail.” - A Christmas Carol, Charles Dickens For me, the first line of A Christmas Carol is the most perfect opening line to any story. It invokes curiosity, an air of odd-ness, and the nagging question of ‘wait... isn’t this story supposed to be about Christmas?’ Oh is it ever! And spooky ghosts! And second chances! And redemption! It’s a story that teaches us the true meaning of Christmas, the season, life in general, and that no matter who you are, or what you believe, basic human kindness and goodwill can and should be practiced by everyone, that life is so much more than hate and misery, and that we only have one life. Best to start living it! This fragrance is of course inspired by Jacob Marley, Ebenezer Scrooge’s old business partner, and the selfless ghost who warns his old friend to change his nasty ways. I can only describe this as smelling cold; like Scrooge’s dark bed chamber—faint embers still glowing in a dim fireplace, on a freezing Christmas Eve. Fire, citrus, poppies, spice, and hints of wood and pine trees. This is a sharp, dark, ghostly and wonderfully strange scent.
